GM Powertrain
Engine Technology New Vortec Advantage
|
|
What
is Vortec?
“Vortec”
is a brand of GM Powertrain engines that delivers more horsepower and
greater fuel efficiency than comparable competitors’ engines. The name
Vortec originated in the 1986 4.3 V-6 engine that used a combination of
“vortex” and “GM technology” to create a vortex inside the combustion
chamber. GM Powertrain engineers incorporated this phenomenon into their
engine to achieve a better air-to-fuel mixture in the combustion process.
The result is what has now developed into Vortec Engines; engines with
significantly increased horsepower and improved fuel efficiency.
For example, the 1996 Chevrolet Silverado went from 180 hp in the
previous model year to 250 hp, while improving fuel economy from 15 mpg
to 18 mpg. Unlike typical engines, Vortec Engines deliver both power and
efficiency.

Uncompromised
Power
GM
Vortec Engine are powerful, efficient, durable, low-maintenance engines
for people who expect their vehicles, boats, and equipment to perform for
years under demanding conditions.
By creating the Vortec brand, GM Powertrain is supplying OEMs with
another tool to use in selling their application. Customers will
recognize the Vortec brand as representing the best in commercial engine
technology, a technology with co compromises.
Work Hard — Play Hard
GM is applying the same technology found in its world-class trucks to
Vortec marine and industrial engines. This includes improvements in cylinder
head design, control systems and sensors, and durability. Whether on the
road, water, or job site, OEMs can count on GM Vortec Engines to deliver
all the performance needed for as long as it is needed.

Talk About Engines
Before
you rebuild an engine for your airboat, check with us to make sure you
are getting your horse powers’ worth. Many times we see airboaters start
to build an engine they think will have more hose power than our factory
motors, only to find our they do not. Our small blocks turn 78Wx50L
paddle props and our big blocks turn 78Wx60L paddle props. 78Wx50L and
78Wx60L are real producers. So make sure when you plan an engine you get
the results you are looking for. We suggest you talk about the ability of
your motor to turn a given size prop, not horse power. That gets to the
nitty gritty of where airboat performance really comes from.
Classic can help, so call! To build more horse power and turn more prop
than our factory motors, you must spend more money than what an engine
would cost from Classic—That’s a Fact!

Working
hard to increase boating pleasure
For
more than 40 years, GM has been a leader in marine engines. Its first
official entry into the marine market was in 1958 with a 284-cid, 185-hp
Chevrolet engine. In 1960,
a group was formed within GM to fully support
marine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Today, GM Powertrain
supplies a wide array of
engines to several OEMs.
The marine environment puts special demands on an engine, so GM
Powertrain has focused on the marine market segment. Corrosion-resistant
alloys, engine oil sealing systems, marine-specific camshaft designs, a
cooling system that works with both salt and fresh water are only a few
of the GM-powered features that have benefited marine OEMs for many
years.
All GM Powertrain engine plants meet or exceed QS 9000 quality process
standards. In addition, a GM-powered marine engine customer can take
added comfort in knowing that all components are backed by the GM Service
Parts Organization.
